Upsell Bundle + A la Carte products on Shopify

We call it mixed bundling, where the products are sold both in a bundle and (at least some) separately.

According to this article on Forbes and this research form the Hardvard Business School, mixed bundles work better than pure Bundle or pure A la Carte offers.

The research from the early 2000's stars Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP consoles and the games for both devices. Here are the key conclusions:

  1. Consumers value the bundle less than they would value the individual component products.

  2. Despite this, Nintendo sold the most products when it offered a bundle option—a video game console and a game sold together as one package—coupled with an option to buy each piece individually.

  3. Sales from this "mixed bundling" offering were estimated to be much stronger than a scenario where such a bundle was not offered.

  4. However, when a bundle was the consumer's only option—a "pure bundling" scenario—Nintendo would fare much worse (20% less revenue), when compared with both offers that lacked any bundle as well as those with the mixed bundling option.

Consider the upsell context

As Anthony Ng Monica, CEO of Swogo, reminds us, general trends teach the importance of the context in which the upsell happens:

We have found that bundles are best to show on the product details page. The reason is because it encourages customers to buy more than one add-on product.

Once the customer heads to the shopping cart, it works best to recommend them individual add-on products based on what they have in their basket. That's why in our example below we'll display a bundle on the product page and an add-on product (A la carte) on the Cart page.

Upsell 👖 + 👕 Bundle and 🎩 A la carte

Let's take the example of upselling a bundle of a pair of jeans 👖 and a t-shirt 👕 on the product page, plus an A la Carte Leather Cap 🎩 on the Cart page.

Step #1: Display the 👖 + 👕 Bundle on the 👖 page

1. 👉 Install the Ultimate Upsell app.

2. Create a new upsell.

3. Choose to upsell products together in the Upsell type (Bundle).

4. What → Select the products to upsell. You can select a product or a variant only.

5. When → Select when to trigger the upsell on the Jeans product page.

6. Discount → In my example I give a 25% discount, from $120 (jeans $100 + t-shirt $20) to $90.

7. Where → Select the location of the upsell: in theme, notification or popup. I choose to display the bundle on the product page.

You can preview different locations. Once you're satisfied, click Save and close the window.

8. You can add a title to the upsell offer like "Complete the look!". Then Select "Published" in the dropdown menu and click the Checkmark icon to Save the Upsell.

Step #2: Display the A la Carte 🎩 on the Cart page

9. Create another upsell.

10. Choose to upsell products individually in the Upsell type (A la Carte). A la carte upsell shopify

11. What → Select the products to upsell. Now it's the biker cap.

12. When → Select to trigger the upsell when cart contains any/all of the products Biker Jeans and Black T-Shirt.

13. Where → Select the location of the upsell: in theme, notification or popup. I choose to display the bundle on the Cart page, in a notification.

You can preview different locations. Once you're satisfied, click Save and close the window.

14. You can add a title to the upsell offer like "Only 1 cap left!". Then Select "Published" in the dropdown menu and click the Checkmark icon to Save the Upsell.

15. Sit back, relax and check your numbers grow!
